Dr. Simon Claire
Jocasta, have you … have you heard of the term pulhata? It's from the Enuma Elish, it describes the fear that surrounds the mother of chaos, Tiamat, and her many monstrous spawn. It’s come down to us in SANDMAN to describe just that feeling you're talking about there, the power of the Irruptors.
SANDMAN-employed psychiatrist to whom Jocasta is assigned for periodic consultation and evaluation. He maintains a civilian practice as cover and an office at the Presidio, which is decorated in the vogue of a typical early ‘70s progressive psychiatrist: cheaply framed “world” art, lots of knick-knacks to keep the patients looking up, et cetera. Jocasta’s relationship with Dr. Claire is strained, perhaps even somewhat antagonistic.
SANDMAN dispatched Simon to interview and assist in the therapeutic rehabilitation of Roger following Roger’s brush with death at the hands of Bernadette Fry. He seems to practice in the Jungian tradition, with an interest in mythology and symbolism. While in his office, Roger observed:
stark black-and-white photos of tribal masks, and maybe even a wooden carving here and there. Neo-primitivist but in a calculated, West Coast sort of way. Dripping with Jungian associations. There is an office chair for Dr. Claire near his roll-top desk (which doesn't really fit well in the environs) and a high window behind his chair which neither of you can see out of at this angle (good for preventing attention drift), and there's a plush armchair or a sturdy velvet green divan for the patient or patients.
